Most jazz vocalists sing standards. Allegra Levy writes her own. From the plaintive title track of her brazenly autobiographical debut album, Lonely City, to the haunting strains of its intricate closing ballad, “The Duet,” the 24-year-old New York-based vocalist and composer has penned a lyrical collection of 11 harmonically adventurous-yet-familiar originals steeped in the tradition of the Great American Songbook. A West Hartford native, Levy – currently the resident jazz singer in the Hong Kong Four Seasons hotel – returns home for one night only to celebrate in concert the release of her first CD, due out Nov. 10 from SteepleChase Lookout. She will be joined by Hartford native Sean Clapis on guitar, Timothy Norton (originally from West Hartford) on bass, Matt Rousseau of Southbury on drums, and New York-based pianist Sean McCluskey. Levy first honed her musical skills at Hall High School, where she was a regular soloist with the concert jazz band. She later graduated from New England Conservatory in Boston. In 2008, she made her international debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and has since cut her teeth in assorted New York clubs including Tomi Jazz, Somethin’ Jazz, and The Flatiron Room, as well as at Black-Eyed Sally’s. “This is a mature first recording by a singer you’re sure to hear more from,” says renowned trumpeter John McNeil, who produced the album. “The tunes are catchy and well-constructed, and you’ll probably find yourself singing them in a short time. I sing them still.”
